About
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church serves locally as a kind of modern village green for many in Richmond. From daily worship to a Saturday farmers market, weekly small groups to world-class guest speakers, providing fellowship and nurture to people at every stage of life, we provide a gathering place where people come to love and be loved, to grow in faith and spirit, and to explore what matters most in life. This embracing community is open to all (not just 'members'), and is constantly evolving and growing.
At the same time, it is deeply rooted in ancient, Christian traditions of prayer, contemplation, theological exploration, and loving engagement. We have a special concern for the marginalized and poor, and we want to help all people with the challenges of living whole and healthy lives. As one of the largest Episcopal churches in the United States, St. Stephen’s offers educational and enrichment opportunities for all ages, drawing people regionally for many of our programs and events. Our reach extends nationally and internationally, with partnerships addressing human need across the world. And we regularly hear from people who participate in our worship offerings, educational events, and Bible studies online. We cherish this rich and diverse community and remember one another in prayer.
The size of this parish can be invigorating, and it can also be disorienting. We encourage everyone associated with St. Stephen’s to consider an approach to their lives that includes balanced attention to three components:
- Engage with a small group of people who are committed to caring for each other, praying for each other, and supporting each other in the journey of their lives. We have many small groups at St. Stephen’s, and we are happy to help you plug in.
- Learn how to pray and meditate. Jesus’ exhortation that each of us should learn how to go into our room, close the door, and pray secretly is an indication of the importance of contemplative prayer and even deep, mystical engagement.
- Explore and take your place in the larger gatherings of the community, from Sunday worship to community suppers to our farmers markets. Using the human body as a metaphor, some of us are hands, others are feet, or eyes, or ears – we are part of each other and need each other.
You are invited.
We invite you to explore the pages of our Web site to learn more about these opportunities, and we hope that you will feel how much we are eager to meet you, welcome you, and have you take part in our life.
On behalf of the rector, the Rev. John Rohrs, the vestry, staff and people of St. Stephen's, welcome.
